It’s a Winter Recreation-Land in Muskoka

We’ve said it before, life doesn’t slow down around the Muskoka region once winter arrives. The snowfall and gorgeous parks, trails and forests provide the perfect background for winter recreation fun. Even if it gets a bit too cold to be out for long, we also have indoor sport options to experience. Listed below are some of our top recommendations for winter fun, check them out and enjoy the season of cold and snow in Muskoka style.

Go mobile and enjoy the woods in winter in a variety of ways. For the more adventurous there’s fat-tire biking, with wider tires for trekking through snow and ice. Motorized sleds and dog sleds offer two different experiences for snow-bound transport. For a romantic night out, or the perfect way to create a family memory of a lifetime, take a sleigh horse ride through the forest.

Ice Skating. Not only can you skate on your choice of various lakes and ponds around the area, there are indoor skating options such as at the Canada Summit Centre in Huntsville. There’s also another unique way to enjoy a round of skating. Head over to Arrowhead Provincial Park for a 1.3k frozen trail where you can literally ice skate in the woods.

Games on ice. There’s nothing like winter team sports. Hockey is a Canadian pastime, and the kids love to play Shinny, a variation on the game. Both of us, my wife, Sandra and myself (Rick), love another Canadian winter pastime, curling. If you’ve not tried curling before, you are in for a treat. Teamwork, good reflexes and coordination all come together as players aim to have the curling stone to slide as far as it can, accurately on the ice with one push. Check out the Huntsville Curling Club and join in the fun yourself.

Snow Skiing. One of the oldest modes of winter transportation is also a lot of fun, and a great workout. All around Muskoka you can find skiing trails, perfect for downhill skiing or cross-country trekking. You can go skiing by day and night, which ever you fancy. Close to Huntsville you’ll find Hidden Valley Highlands Ski Area, ideal for getting in a good run down the hills or explore the trails.

There also longstanding winter traditions like Ice Fishing and Snowshoeing, both of which can be enjoyed in Muskoka.  Ice fishing brings friends and family together – huddle up in an ice fishing hut for a relaxing day and catch some large or small mouth bass, perch or pickerel. Snowshoeing offers another way to get an excellent workout along winter trails. They’re so quiet as you move through the snow, you can really get in touch with yourself and nature.

We really do enjoy life year-round here, and so can you. When it’s time to buy or sell your Muskoka home, cottage or condo make the process an easier one with the help of a realty team you can trust and rely on.  Whatever your Muskoka property dreams may be, let us, Rick Wearing and Sandra Parrott, put our care and expertise to work for you.
